Even for F1 my K-7 did a good job with the Sigma 150-500mm

Would you call that a sonic boom?
the scientific term for this effect is a Prandtl–Glauert singularity.

My photos taken by K-7 for reference

I would say current K-5IIs has a much more better AF than previous models. Whether Pentax is adequate for the racing mainly depends on the photographer himself whether the outcomes are up to his expectations. Of course, Pentax's AF speed is stll lacked behind Canon and Nikon and hopes the coming model from Pentax could even better.

Well, alright. These pictures have pretty much convinced me that I'll be just fine with this camera. I was debating getting the new Nikon D7100, but I really liked Pentax, and these pictures definitely tipped it in Pentax's favor. I was looking to buy a camera that would help me take some good pictures of my hobbies. Though I think I might delay a few months, since I heard Pentax will be putting out a new camera, and I'm curious to see what that one can do.

I am using K-5 for airshows and I can confirm that it is decent camera for this kind of photography (even K-r which I was using before was really good for it).

Please remember that camera body is just part of your equipment. Second one, maybe even more important, is lens with really fast autofocus. Unfortunately, for Pentax mount there is nothing comparable to Canon 100-400 which is very often mentioned as "the lens" for airshows. I am using Sigma 100-300 f/4, sometimes with 1.4 TC.

On my website you will find some results:

I think it should work very good for F1 cars too!

My K-5 focused and tracked really well a snowmobile which was coming towards (not the easist job for camera to keep it's focus on snowmobile or any fast vehicle coming towards) for me. Took 5 photos and all of them was sharp ones. And the lens was DA 55-300, distance to snowmobile was maybe 5-10 meters.

The photo is here PENTAX : PENTAX Photo Gallery artist page, page two.
