Pentax K-5 doesn't record serial number in EXIF?

Recently I came across an interesting story, "5 LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT DSLR CAMERAS THAT MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND THEM WHEN STOLEN"
htt://www.photographytalk.com/photography-articles/2936-5-little-known-facts-about-dslr-cameras-that-make-it-easier-to-find-them-when-stolen

... and I was dismayed to learn that the K-5 doesn't store its serial number in the EXIF data. I have already set the other owner information but this is easy for a thief to change within the camera.

Is it true that the K-5 does not save its serial number in the EXIF information or is there a setting to enable this?

Thanks

Nice link....

Tried it and it displayed numbers for "Serial Number" and "Internal Serial Number". I know that the "Serial Number" is the number on the bottom of my K-5 but what is the "Internal Serial Number"?

But why can't I see either serial number in Windows 7's image properties, details, "Camera serial number"? Additionally, neither numbers appear in Adobe Photoshop 6 or Lightroom (even with Jeffrey’s “Metadata Viewer” Lightroom plugin). Odd?

Also, I downloaded two free EXIF programs (Exiftool and KUSO_EXIF_Viewer) and both only display the "Internal Serial Number".

Can someone suggest a good EXIF viewer?

Thank you

It looks like the EXIF metadata actually contains a huge amount of data and apparently makers of PP and EXIF viewer software have included items that they think are relevant.

I personally keep a database including the purchase date, what I paid, and the serial number of every camera and lens I own. It is a simple but effective way of keeping track of things if they are missing or stolen.

I am surprised that no one linked Phil Harvey's exiftool.
It is the single most up-to-date and powerful EXIF reader around:

I mentioned it in my second posting and also, Jeffrey’s “Metadata Viewer” for LightRoom uses Exiftool in the background.

FYI, there is a nice GUI available for Phil Harvey's tool that makes Phil's tool a million times more convenient, located here: ExifToolGUI
