live view focus

Hi everyone. I apologize if this is an already-discussed topic, but i couldn't locate one so I thought I'd post here. I bought my K-5 a few months ago and am just thrilled with it. I recently picked up a used and quite inexpensive SMC-F 50mm 1.7 and i'm loving the portraiture potential.

My difficulty is that I'm trying to shoot in live-view to ensure that my focus is dead on the eyes (i really want them to pop) and in liveview, whether i push the AF button or the shutter release and regardless of the AF collar position, the camera will focus in, focus out a bit, and say it's in focus, when NOTHING in the frame is even close.

Is this a simple settings fix? I've run through the manual a few times but not even sure what I'm looking for. Anyone else?

You can not calibrate contrast focusing, it does not need calibration because of the way it works.

Where does it not look in focus, during live view or when viewing back photos?

You can manually focus that lens, definitely been done before.

it's not in focus at all when i'm taking the picture or in playback. and i appreciate the idea of manual focus but i bought this lens because of its auto capability. i also inherited the manual 50mm 1.7 and i wanted something that would auto-focus. it only happens with this lens which makes me wonder if there's something off about the connection between the F and the k5...i don't know, but it's driving me nuts!

What kind of focusing are you using?
Contrast of phase?

If other lenses focus fine it's probably that particular lens. Does it manually focus okay?
