K5 bounce flash overexposure

Has anybody personally found out that a firmware upgrade fixes this problem?

I don't believe that it's been fixed, at least that's been my impression based on what most users ended up saying.

So I don't know if this has an impact or not - but try pulling out the built in diffuser panel. This keeps the flash at 13mm zoom. I did this at one wedding and didn't have a single overexposed flash on bounce. I had it set like this all fall (the heaviest part of my wedding season) and I never had a flash overexposure on my k5 when bouncing. I was using the 540 on manual to bounce before, but for some reason, P-TTL seemed to work when bouncing with that diffuser thing out. Go figure.

Thanks, Allison. Did you position the flash at full 90 deg. (vertical)?

Most of the time the flash was straight up. About half of my weddings last year had white ceilings that I could bounce off of. The other weddins where I did not have a white ceiling (or the ceiling was too high) I had a rogue flash bender on it, so usually straight up. The rogue is a little trickier with p-ttl since the flash has no idea that a giant white panel is attached to it, so I usually dial the compensation on the flash down a stop - it also depends what type of light show the DH or band has going on too. But even when I was using the flash bender and flash compensation I was getting consistent results, which is key.

I can certainly do it manual now, so maybe this whole pttl/bounce/k5 thing was good cause it taught me a whole lot more about flash, but at a wedding reception with a dj, lights, and the constantly changing exposure it has been nice to actually use pttl on my (former) flagship camera.

Guys one question, with my metz 48 af-1 i need -1EV to have perfect shots on k-5, but i bought yesterday the 58 af-1 and i can see that it needs -3EV to have good exposures..I 'm always using bounce at 45 degrees with a diffuser on.. Any ideas?is this normal?

With Metz flashes, set it to A mode and forget the rest. I have never had any problems with A mode.

The 48 does not have it but the 58 does. Most of specialist flashes have it except the 15.

I thought the idea of p-TTL was that no matter what is attached to the flash, and no matter how the flash is bounced, the metering is based on the light from the preflash strobe reflected back, through the lens, to the light sensor inside the camera.

I think Metz AF58-1 does not have auto thyristor mode.<- I'm wrong.

My policy: if a flash does not have auto thyristor mode, I just don't buy it.

This is quoted from 58 AF-1 Manual
5.5 Automatic flash mode
In the automatic flash mode A, the flash unit sensor
 measures the light that
reflects back from the subject. The sensor
has a coverage of about 25°, and
only measures the light for the time a flash is fired by the mecablitz. The flash is
cut off as soon as sufficient light has been emitted for correct exposure. The sensor
of the mecablitz has to be directed at the subject.
The maximum range is shown on the LC display. The shortest shot distance is
approximately 10% of the maximum distance range. The subject should be located within the middle third of the distance range shown on the LC display to
allow the electronic system sufficient leeway for compensation.
Setting procedure:
• Press the „Mode“ button until „Mode“ flashes on the LC display.

TTL TTL
☞98

• Set the flash mode using the UP and DOWN keys. The flash mode
selected is then highlighted. The setting takes effect immediately.
• Press the „Return“ button to change the LC display back to the normal
view. If the „Return“ button is not pressed, the display will change back to
the normal view after about 5 seconds.
If the shot was properly lit, the correct exposure indication
 will flash „OK“ for
about 3 seconds (see 14).

You're absolutely correct. My bad. I was thinking of the 52 AF-1.

Soldbear I think you are right about pttl. I still dial it down when using the flash bender - the results are just better for what I am doing. The important thing is that I get consistent shots from the 540 on the k5 even when I am bouncing.
