Manual lenses with K5ii

I have just purchased the K-5ii and want to use manual Pentax lenses with it but even though I put the focus controls on MF and put the program setup to M (manual) there is no F stop registered or speed - just a question mark and flickering. What am I doing wrong?

Anybodys help would be much appreciated…

Did you set "using aperture ring" (in the menu) to "permitted"?
