But for email and social media all you need is like.. 3MP. As long as they are high quality (lots of data, low noise). I doubt any manufacturer would bother making an exchangeable-lens camera with such low MP, though.
Huh now I'm wondering if they could make a big-sensor low MP camera but really boost its performance in other areas, like dynamic range and noise.

24MP would be nice, if it came with generally good IQ. Good high res allows tighter cropping and more composition adjustment. Print wise,though, unless you are printing A3 size gallery quality prints or something, 24MP offers no real benefit over 16MP, or probably even over 12MP.

24 MP is likely to be a catalyst for a round of LBA. When I indulge in some pixel peeping (occasionally) - my not so good glass would look even worse.

So I'm not sure I can afford 24 MP even it came free - LOL

Seriously though, as mentioned, it would offer more options for cropping (assuming the glass is up to it!) - as long as it was not at the expense of high ISO performance.

I doubt I'd need it. My A4 size prints look great on both 16 and 12 MP. I expect 16 to be more than enough for A3. And I rarely do heavy cropping.

What I don't need, at least not with my current computer, is the size of 24MP raw files. Don't have the processing power to handle them. So I'm not in the market for 24, at least not now.

I would take 24mp just for the purpose of cropping to retain good detail. It would be great for those of us who like to shoot birds and are usually cropping anyway.

Marketing since WWII has blurred the line between needs and wants. Nobody needs a better camera. What marketing and technology development has done is make the unobtainable affordable. I don't need 24MP, but chances are when my camera dies or I grow tired of my present camera and I have too much money, my next camera is likely to be 24MP or higher. At the moment 16MP suits me just fine.

Assuming it's modern sensor tech and pixel QE, more MP gives you 1) ability to print or display larger while maintaining high DPI/PPI, 2) better cropping ability, and 3) more appealing high-ISO images when downsampled to the same display sizes.

By 'more appealing' I mean: the noise is finer-grained, and when downsampled tends to give an image that looks crisper, nicer, more 'real' than the noise footprint from less MP. It also tends to hold up to NR better while preserving detail. You can also see some of this effect with lower-ISO images. (The downsampling benefit is kind of a big deal, because more people display on the web at 1024, 1600 or 2048p-width than print these days, and more MP can help there.)

Downside: Diffraction will give you diminishing returns a bit sooner (but will never produce an image with less detail than a lower-res sensor, a point some get confused about,) and the files will be somewhat slower-to-process until your workstation is upgraded to match.
