Interesting, because I first came across them when I was researching the Leica X1, where I found their review helpful (I didn't buy an X1 in the end). I ended up watching most of their Leica reviews, and Kai is a bit of a Leica fan. That doesn't stop them doing atrocious things and taking the extreme mickey out of their own culture and themselves on occasions. Still very clever from a marketing point of view, as lots of people know about it, and hence know their brand

As I listen to Kai and his reviews I realize what a completely self-absorbed snob he is, it's a real turn off but then as some have pointed out I'm not the demographic they're looking for because I believe that gratuitous derisive comments about the people you encounter is just poor form.

Western culture meets edgy asian youth culture...it's not going to be a happy ending .

In their part of the world, I would be prepared to bet it isn't middle aged white blokes who buy most of the camera's

Hmm...for some reason I am reminded of some off-color veterans' stories from being in Vietnam...

You'd be right about their part of the world. Still, poor form to continuously, and apparently reflexively, deride those he encounters and photographs. Just starting my Friday here, have a nice nap.

Not a bad review. I'm surprised, because Kai is normally very disrespectful of Pentax. Even his compliments usually include snootiness or a slight.

I am only bothered by one thing they said: The Nikon clearly performs better at high ISO? How could they reach that conclusion, and what was up with the K-5 II's high ISO photos? Noise performance is pretty equal according to DXOMark.

A Pentax camera getting reviewed and recommended on the world's most widely watched camera / lens reviews is a good thing. The snitty remarks about Kai's presentation style or some of the silly things they do on their shows goes to show that there really is no pleasing some people.

They don't ignore Pentax - I've seen a review of the K-r (which they thought was sort-of OK) and if you search for the pancake day special you will see that the 40 Limited gets a lot of praise.

It's not that there is no pleasing some people - the reviews are bias, full of derisive comments, and often end in the mutilation of a camera. Popularity does not make someone ethical, moral, polite, respectful, or deserving of praise. While it is doubtless in Pentax's favor to be on the show, the show itself is full of self-important and quite poorly mannered dolts IMHO. Enjoy watching it all you like but the information there is never actually accurate and always seems to come with a decided agenda.

Well, I generally agree that Kai and crew are obnoxious, but it's nothing to get annoyed about. Their reviews are pure marketing, end of story. And they reach more than the Asian market... the kids at my university watch it and, sadly, pay attention.

But then, I have an admission to make.

About three or so years ago when I was looking for my first camera, just about the first review I saw or read from any source was a random click on DRTV... and they happened to be doing that awful in-camera HDR review where they covered the K-r with astro-turf. At that point I thought Pentax made scuba equipment and that HDR was a document management system. It was pretty clear Kai was a twit and I wasn't watching a real review... but by the end of the video I knew that the Pentax K-r was the only camera in its class that could shoot HDR and did a bucket of other things the other cameras didn't. That made me curious about Pentax. By the end of the evening a bit of research made it clear the Canikon duopoly was just the Ford/Holden of the photography world, and by the end of the week it was obvious to me that for an enthusiast Pentax was the best value kit going (not sure about for professionals, but that's another debate). I purchased a K-x shortly thereafter and here I am.

I went from literally knowing nothing about photography except what I could do with my phone to owning a K-x and being an avowed Pentaxian within a week. And it all started with Kai Wong and probably the silliest camera review they ever did... apart from the one they did for K-01.

This K5IIs review is serious and well balanced by comparison. Cringe worthy or not, that review is likely to be the most effective marketing that Pentax gets all year. So, for this evening... it's "GO LOK" from my corner.

(as an aside, the Ricoh GR just got a good plug from The Camera Store versus the Nikon Coolpix. Poor old Nikon...)

This is indeed good for pentax. It doesn't matter that alot of people don't like the format, dialogue, or the characters that they portray on DRTV. This webshow is a commercial for cameras and if your brand is not on it then you are doing something wrong. I do enjoy it and also enjoy the people who post comments at the bottom of every vid that say how they are stupid, awful and 'used to be so much better'. The people that complain that they are obnoxious and should not be taken seriously are playing perfectly into their hands as even a negative vote still goes into their favour. Do I think that it is a good idea to strip and paint a Leica m9 or set a Canon on fire? No in fact I think it's incredibly stupid. Am I going to 'tune' in and smile? You bet I am <img src="https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.png" border="0" alt="" title="Smile" smilieid="1" class="inlineimg" />

Why are you so upset about that? You're acting like they took your camera and painted it pink. What they do with their own cameras is their own business. No harm done to anyone else.

Back on topic, I'd say this review is doubly surprising, considering that the K-5 IIs is a warmed-over version of a 2½ -year-old camera, while the Nikon is brand new. It's amazing that Pentax did so much right in 2010 that only a few tiny tweaks keep their cameras competitive in 2013.

I agree that this is good exposure for Pentax. I haven't seen them paint a Pentax camera (yet) but remember these are the guys that covered a K-R in grass and moss.
