Crazy time to buy a K-5? (mk1)

I'm struggling to hold out on the upgrade from the K-7 which I would sell.

Its the ISO advantage more than anything I'm after.

Would I be bonkers to buy a K-5 mk1 right now?

Whatever the new high end model will be I'm guessing it'll be at least £800 or 1000USD or something.

K-50 doesn't seem a big enough departure from the K-30 from what's flying about at the moment.

If you can find a k-5 on sale for $700USD, and you aren't looking for amazing AF improvements, go for it.

The high ISO improvement, similar body handling, faster framerate performance, quiet shutter, and overall better image quality as compared to the k-7 makes the k-5 worth it - especially at the bargain prices nowadays.

I personally would like to get a k-5 mk1 as well, but I really desire the low-light AF that the k-5II is known for.

No. This is a very good time to buy the original K5. Or two of them...

Last month I bought a second K5 [used] to go with the K5 I already own. I did not see the difference in low light AF to be worth the extra money for the newer versions of the K5. Of course, photography is only a hobby for me, so that difference maybe important for some.

I recently posted the following in this forum. Though my debate was whether to get a K5ii or a used K5 plus a wide angle lens. In your case, you will definitely notice the high ISO difference between K7 and K5. Not sure about other aspects so much.

I would guess that the new high end model would be at least $1500 USD, so the current prices on the K-5 are a substantial bargain.

I would get the k-5, then in 1-2 years when your ready to upgrade to the newer model, it will be much less expensive. Better option then waiting for the new model and spending top dollar when in 1 year the price will drop like all models.

I wouldn't hesitate to get the old K5. I am currently shooting with two of them and saving my shekels for whatever Pentax releases this fall (sure hope it is worth it), but I do think there are significant improvements over the K7.

There have been so many deals on used K-5s lately. If I were you, I would buy one in the high 400s; but when you look at it new the K5 II is 798 and the K-5 is 699. I think $100 is worth spending to get the newer camera.

There are some great deals in the US on the k5II, so if you can get a good deal, it could be worth the extra for the II. If not, it is a great time to buy a k5 which is still a wonderful camera. Whatever the new flagship is, it will like cost $1500-$1600 US, which sounds like more than you want to spend. I don't think k5 prices will go lower when the new camera is released, so go for it.

The difference in IQ between the K-7 and K-5 is significant.

If your primary reason is for improved high ISO IQ then the K-5 is an excellent choice.
Not sure you can find them new anymore, so if you are OK with used you can find good deals.

If you want new, then it will have to be II or IIs versions.

Amazon still has it new, Larry; but the price difference is small between the new K-5 and the new K-5II.

Oh, then in that case K-5II I guess to get the warranty. OP don't forget your extra 2 year if you go that route.

The K5 is a pretty awesome camera. I upgraded from the K10D a year and a half ago and the difference in high ISO shots is incredible. There have been some pretty good deals on the original K5 and there are used ones turning up in the Marketplace. I might be inclined to the K5lls rather then the K5ll. There is always something new just around the corner. For my needs, I buy a camera for a good price and plan to keep it a few years. The only reason I bought the K5 when I did was because I came into some extra cash at the time. My plan was to upgrade when the next model was rolling out and take advantage of the bargain prices. I bought mine for just under $1000. The K5 rolled out in the $1500 range and it was well over a year before it broke the $1000 barrier so expect the next big thing to be priced similar.

I upgraded to a NOS K-5 only a month or so ago, and I think it was well worth it.

Agree pete-tarmigan, I got a slight-used K5 two weeks ago at just USD600. I only have manual lenses so auto-focus speed doesn't concern me until I get auto-focus lenses in the future. Until now I have nothing to complaint about my K5 (but this is also because I upgrade from Canon 450D).

Buy it! The high ISO capability will put a big grin on your face.
