I've just upgraded from K20d to K5+ SMC 50mm f 1.7 manual lens.
It's a wonderful combo,-perfectly suitable for portraits.
The pic below was shot with the lens wide open and the K5 at 400 ISO and with highlight protection on.
Note the highlighted area at on the left side of the face. With the K20d this area
would have been pretty much burned out. Not so with the K5.
A wonderful camera indeed.

Nice portrait. But isn't that highlight protection only applicable to the out of camera JPEGs?

I do think it applies to RAW as well. I did a test with highlight protection on and off, shooting RAW,-and the highlights were less burned out with highlight protection on.

A beautifully natural portrait, you've got the focus just right - sharp on the eyes, a touch softer on the lips - and nice lighting

I'd like to see the same image on a K20D. I'm not convinced the highlights on her face would have been blon- this not a contrasty image.

Nice. What flash or other light source did you use to create the catch lights in her eyes? It seems very tiny.

No catchlights were used at all. The image was shot using the natural light that was available at the moment,
The only thing I can think of that could have acted as a light source was a large window located behind me.
As I remember there were no lamps lit in the living room either.

How on earth is her skin so smooth? Have you done smoothening or what?

Blemishes on the skin is dealt with by using the "spot healing brush" in PS.
Then "new layer via copy", then heavy noise reduction on the whole layer,-then a mask is created and the NR effect is removed
from the hair, eyes and lips.. Another layer and then sharpening by quite a large amount,- mask,-and the sharpening is
removed from everything but the eyes, lips and hair.
In the film-era, the same was done by studio lighting, make-up and retouching the paper copies. Thank God for Photoshop.

Nice photo, I agree.

I also agree that the K20D would not have blown the highlights. The K20D actually meters quite conservatively, and the camera does have effective highlight protection. Determining where the highlights land on the histogram is up to the photographer, not the camera.

I see a touch of the typical K-5 slight blue cast here. I prefer the more neutral K20D white balance in daylight. Of course this is down to preference and easy to tweak in post processing.
