For the more skittish birds, the feeder usually draws them to about 15 -20 feet from my blind. Some of these were taken s close as 5 or 6 feet away. The little chickadees, sometimes i just walk right up to them, they are very tame.

But I'd warn you, I've been working on this set up for a while. It takes some messing around with feeder positions and natural looking perches etc. to get it right.

My current feeder set up...

My blind is just off to the left.. you have to be really lucky to be able to set up, so the sun is behind you, you have some shade but not too much, and hopefully enough small branches around for birds to perch on, before they go to the feeders.

For good or bad he has decided to buy the 60-250 and the Pentax HD TC. Hopefully that will get him the shots he wants.

What he really wanted was probably the DA 560 or Sigma 500 4.5, but that's a whole different ball park.

He has the 60-250 and the hd tc and has had time to use it and loves it. He went for a drive and found some subjects to shoot from the car(not birds) and enjoyed it immensely. His next purchase will be a window mount.

I have ordered the DA* 60-250mm.

$1349.00 Fulfilled by Amazon. They were great with no re-stocking on the DA* 300 and they covered the return freight and insurance.

I'll wait till after I have the new lens to sell the DA* 50-135.

Thanks everyone for the input and I should be able to post some great pictures in September.

Cheers
No-one has mentioned the one, not so obvious answer to the 300 vs 60-250 size and weight problem.. I now have the Pentax 1.4 rear extender along with my 60-250, fabulous answer to that $$$$ and size & weight issue

See above. My dad had that combo but decided he wanted the 200 2.8 so I bought it and swapped with him. He then gave me the converter. I like the combo but I have no DA* 300 to compare with.

Man! I';ve been buying from Adorama and B&H, and both places will beat anything Amazon ever does, and they don't sell grey matket stuff... I stand 100% behind both of those stores and can show you a few thousand reasons$$$ why. Check em out. I got a 60-250 at a "better-than-that" price (adorama)
