Interesting dialogue. The bottom line is that the photographer still has to compensate for the extremes of the shot. As the camera doesn't really know what the subject is, the photogrpher has to control the shot. For example, when shooting white birds, my starting point is usually a -1EV bias, because the whites will always get blown out compared to everything else. If shooting against a bright back ground, then over-exposure is called for. That's just the way it works. I read somewhere that 'all metering systems lie' - it is up to the photographer to catch the lie.
