The full EXIF data isn't available, so I can't tell you if the ISO was too high or not, or if you just hit the sweet spot for this image. For all I know you could have had water splatter on the front of the lens. Whatever you did, it worked out well.

Other wiser sages on the forum have said this before - the only bad photo is the one you don't take. There is no cost to taking a digital image, so keep making mistakes and hopefully many more will be just as good as this one.

This is very nice, and in looking closer, I am seeing what may be actual tree branches, leaves, or pine needles blocking the lens but the lens kind of "shoots through" them. Ordinarily, I hate when that happens and do not keep those shots. This happens to me when I shoot macro; the lens shoots through grass blades. That is my guess as to the soft green color in the foreground. It works for this photo! The subject is clear. Very nice.

Felix Eventus - a happy accident ! -- But a v. nice one. Keep in mind that you created the image and when your done (by accident or not) you have decided the completeness of that image. For simple ways to "convert" Photos to paintings try "Smartphoto Editor" and, if so inclined,let us know your results.

maybe dirty lens? some oily or wet on the front element?

I've been thinking on this, I'm going to guess the wind was blowing, moving the branches in the background which weren't in focus anyway. The weight of the bird was just enough to keep that branch still and perhaps it was more sheltered and didn't catch the breeze, which is why the tip of the branch in focus on the left isn't blurry.
I'm curious, have you tried to reproduce this effect?

I can only concur with all the other comments - it is a LOVELY picture. I thought robgski's post was most like my thought. The shot does evoke a very pleasant emotion for me and it does remind me of a very nice greeting or holiday card.

Few painting have sharp details and crisp lines, yet evoke a feeling, or present a total image that is more than the sum of its parts; gettign that same effect without using filter or PP is tough, but works very well, especially for nature scenes, IMO.

wow.... tis beautiful... keep making mistakes it works for you.. i think the front branches were whipped out of focus giving it this painting look
