Guess I haven't been here in a while. I was still using firmware version 1.01.

Update went smoothly and works fine.
Congratulations!

One more death:
Now 4 (almost 5) users in this forum with sudden death of their Pentax after corrupted firmware-update.

Ask your friendly local Pentax caretaker for goodwill, for this is needed. I was lucky - even without any warranty at all.
The root cause for sudden death (if not an empty battery) can be a corrupted file - bad unzipping - or a hidden problem
on the memory card - or the camera hardware has got a problem you may not have been aware about yet.

These two threads now have got 16.000 views - and only 4 dead cameras listed yet.
So be realistic please - take it easy - relax ... Or add your case to the two lists

That is still a pretty low risk - Even thought that's probably not much comfort for you, Tom!

Sorry to resurect an old thread but did anybody have issue using with firmware? I haven't update my firmware in such a long time and recently I did an update to this and now all my lens are back focusing -- I was force to make adjustment to each of them. :\

I've not experienced any focussing problems, following firmware updates.

I installed firmware version 1.16 in march 2014. No problems with focussing either.

Uploading K-5 V1.16 firmware update

Mark (and others)

I'm new to my Pentax K-5.
Wanted to do the latest firmware update, V1.16.

It placed a single app file (k5_v116w, 9,945 KB) in Users/Owner/Downloads.
There was no read.me or anything executable.

Where have I gone wrong?

Thanks!

Ken

Hi Ken

If you are installing via windows, use the windows download, otherwise, if via mac, use the mac download.
The file you have downloaded, is the windows execuatable file. It's file name extention is .exe.
If you're not seeing file name extensions, then that's a setting you have to change in Windows.
Double-click the file to extract to a folder of your choice.
Once you have done that, you will have two files in your destination folder, fwdc209b.bin and a readme.txt file.

Follow the instructions of the readme file. Make sure your (good healthy) camera battery is fully charged before doing the update. This is very important as you can brick your camera if the battery goes dead while performing the update.

If you're still unsure as what to do, feel free to contact me via skype mark-jerling.

K5 firmware update

I have the same trouble as KBALL45. My windows 10 computer downloads the .exe file but double clicking does not `open' it but asks whether I want this file to alter my computer. I can transfer the .exe file to my formatted SD card but will the camera cope with it?

No, you must put this fwdc209b.bin file on the SD card.
If you just right click the file and choose open?

K5 firmware update

Sorry but it wants to execute, not open. Is there anywhere from which I can download the .bin file without the read-me file?

Download the one for the Mac, it is just a folder in a zip file, extract the bin file from the folder in the zip, there you will have the bin file ready to upgrade the camera.

the exe probably only extracts the folder anyway, not sure as I don't use them, zip files work well, don't know why they bother with exe's.

It's only because it's an executable that you get that file safety message. It won't actually alter your computer.
