Lighroom and Bridge won't recognize K5II PEF but fine with K20?

Hi,

I just went out and tested my new K5II. Everything went smooth but when I got back and tried to download the images, Lightroom could not recognize the PEF files. It does recognizes the PEF from the K20 thou. Same with Bridge and Camera Raw.
Had to use DNG converter to change from PEF to DNG and all is well now.
Any idea why? I can (and will) set the K5II to save as DNG but this has me puzzled.
Any idea?

Thanks,

Do you have the latest ACR updates? If your k20 is being recognized you may just be running an older version.

Thanks Adam!
I thought I did but apparently not. Will look into that.

I updated ACR but it only went from 6.6 to 6.7. In order to support K5II it needs 7.3 according to Adobe's website.
Does that means CS5 can only get to 6.7?
So there is no way CS5 can support K5II PEF?
I set the camera to use DNG instead of PEF and it works well. But I'm just curious.....

Thanks,

You solved the problem according to plan. The reward for Pentax being one of the few makers to support DNG out of the camera is that older Adobe software will support it to a large extent. Proprietary file formats like PEF and CR2 are revised (it's a bit of a racket to me) with every new camera model release and thus require newer versions of software for support.

On a practical level, there is no different between PEF and DNG so you are not losing anything, except those sidecar files.
