that was my thought originally and the original suggestion sounded about right about back focus but since we have no indication of focus type used or the focus point is all conjecture bet to abandon this thread methinks.

Doesn't soun like a back focus problem to me. Sounds like a the focus sensor is way too big problem to me. That's why it is all over the place (at least that's how it sounds in the original post). If it were just back focus, it should always be a certain amount wrong, right?

Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the lens design and whether all elements are properly aligned.
