Just bought a K5, should I be worried?

After happily buying a 2nd hand K5 in Japan in my last holidays a week ago not even, and use the body for one single day very happily I came to the spanish forum (Pentaxeros.com) and read in the K5 section that many K5's have had problems, mirror problems, sensor issues, and even they just "die" and do not take any more pictures,

And so, I am worried about my camera. I thought I was buying a bargain, and a great piece of camera, much better than my skills nowadays (I am a Kr user and was a K110D user before), and felt quite happy with my little new friend.

So I wanted to ask you guys, about this camera issues and if you overhall are happy with the K5 or if I might have done a mistake by buying a copy.

Thank you for your comments and opinions

From what I have read here, the very early production models had the problem. I have had my K5 for over 2 1/2 years and it has performed flawlessly.

My original K-5 from a couple years ago still works flawlessly. The one I bought for my wife also. It's simply one of the best cameras ever made. The best ever made in it's price range. You have to spend thousands more to get a better camera. I seriously don't know what's going on over at your Spanish forum.

Thank you very much gaweidert
Do you know if there is any way I can get to know if my copy it's from the early production models?

I mean it has very few shots made with (9.000) but that won't mean this can not be an early production one.

Thank you very much normhead, this are super news!

I really was getting nervous as even I bought it cheap, I might like my K5 to last as I have read all around it is a beast of a camera and I thougt would be a great idea to get a copy.

I bought mine in January of 2012. The only problem I ever had with it was running out of memory card space and running out of battery because I accidentally forgot to charge it. Ohh, and it made me buy more lenses. Yeah, that is exactly what I am going to blame.

I bought my used K5 earlier this year and have not had a single problem with it. It's a good, solid camera.

The K-5 is a good camera. The number that had problems in the early days of production was pretty small compared to those that had no issues.

You've got the camera now, and it's working - so just use it, enjoy it and don't worry about it

If you are really interested there is a serial number database in this forum where you can see if your camera is in a range of problem batches.
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-serial-number-database/?do=viewserials&id=133

I have a K-5 with over 60,000 shots and it has never had a problem.

Don't worry - just get out and take pictures. I've had some of the freezing but that's a battery issue. Your new batteries when fully charged might have too much power, and the camera freezes to protect itself. Remove and replace the battery if this happens. It will stop after a couple recharge cycles.

The K5 is really durable, mine's taken some falls and is starting to look a little battered, but it is extremely reliable.

If you investigate any camera brand or model you will find some percentage with issues. It's the same for any manufactured product, particularly electronics. The grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.

The fact that your camera is still fully functional is a good indication that it was not a defective unit.

Good price + good camera = good times!

Thank you Very Much guys!
Thanks a lot because you are a solid base to trust on opinions and knowledge and that is about what I was expecting to find, in any way (good or bad) about the camera.

Your comments are not only much appreciated but very useful as well. Thanks!

I just used the URL that crewl1 has posted and my camera as it's number is 38736XX might suffer some problem maybe, as by what I see 3865875 and then 3874112 have had problems, but I hope it won't, or maybe they just replaced something that was wrong.

Anyway yes, i will try to get the best of my "new" camera as I believe it's an impressive model

My on-board flash conked out fairly early, got a warranty repair, no other troubles. I bought the K-5 about a year after it had been released, I think? It's a great camera, be happy -- all electronics break down eventually, that's just the way it is now...

That is a bold statement. I suspect when you say 'best cameras ever made', you're really referring to 'modern DSLRs'. Or do you really
feel the K-5 is on par with the K-1000, or the OM-1 or the Canon F1 or Nikon F in terms of 'best made'?

I do agree that Pentax is producing some of the best made DSLRs on the market at present and virtually nothing compares in their
price range. But I am dubious about ANY modern DSLR in the long term. Modern DSLR are far more complex and the systems they're
built around are changing fast, equating to a higher likelihood of failure and/or obsolescence. Only time will tell whether the K-5, or any
DSLR, is still being used 10, 20, even 40 years from now.

Just check the serial numbers of k-5 reported by users here and you will likely have some idea as to when yours is manufactured.
Pentax K-5 Serial Numbers - Pentax Serial Number Database - PentaxForums.com

I don't think you need to worry about it if the production of your camera has passed one year after it was first introduced.
