Turning the rear wheel (e-dial?) is for zoom in/out if I remember.

For which camera? K-01 you can't disable, I tried. For K3 I believe its "zoom instant review" in menu 4. It's something similar in K5. I have disabled this function, but I don't have my camera in front of me to go through menus for confirmation. Based on a quick look through the K3 User Manual online that looks like the right setting. Default is On.

This is K-5 forum so assume you are asking about the K-5.
On the K-5 if you want to use the sensor based AF it will always zoom in. So setting for happy face or contrast will always zoom.
If you set it to use the PDAF sensor the screen will go dark as the mirror flips down to let the other AF sensors do the work.

Other cameras like K-3 have an improved AF for live view so they do not need to zoom to focus.

With the K-5 you are stuck with that behavior.

Actually on the K-01 you can disable it: Menu (first tab) --> AF/MF settings --> AF Autozoom (checkbox selected or unselected)
