K-5 firmware suggestion

Hi, just wanted to ask, would it be possible to sign a petition or something similar, asking Ricoh if it's possible to do a firmware modification? That is, if more people would be interested.
I just saw a ks2 review, and I understood that one could program the Raw/Fx button on the ks2 to start the selection of the focus point. Would it be possible to do the same on a k-5? I mean, instead of pressing the Ok button for 1 sec and the choose the focus point and then press Ok once more or one second to be able to change image and drive parameters, wouldn't it be nice if one could simply press the Fx button on the side and then choose the focus point and then every button on the back of the camera would still be used for selecting image parameters?
Is the camera too old for firmware updates? Would it imply costs that noone is interested into paying?

If my idea is off I would ask an admin to delete the thread.

Thank you.

I don't own a K-S2 but what you described would be perfect on my K-5!

Unfortunately I think they've stopped releasing updates for the K-5- it doesn't even fully support some of the AF functions on the latest lenses (150-450mm).

It was a good idea. But I think the k-5 is history as far as firmware updates are concerned.

Certainly hope the K-5iis supports the DA16-85 with latest firmware!

I hope they don't abandon it completely. I still use my K-5, although as a backup mostly. Heck, I still like some of the pictures my K-7 produces sometimes.

Ricoh usually support f/w updates for quite a long time after their DSLRs are discontinued - I would expect (and hope - I also have a K-5!) that we will have a few more years before there are no new updates.

Pentax doesn't supply firmware updates after the camera was launched. IMHO support ends the minute the first camera leaves the factory. Yes, bugs are squashed (sometimes... there's still a bug in my K-5 that they never fixed, not sure if they fixed the bug in the K-3 (which also had it). Support for new Pentax gear may be added. But that's as far as it goes, for the most part. Otherwise I could think of many improvements to the K-5 and K-3.

If you want the manufacturer to listen and supply updates after the launch, you'll need to buy a Fuji, Samsung, Olympus or perhaps Panasonic. Especially Samsung does a lot, adding features (that users and reviewers request) on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. Pentax is much more traditional, but who knows, maybe they'll start to see the light one day...

The Fx button is still just a workaround IMHO, the *ist series had an Fn button which could be configured to have the functions (flash, WB etc.) only work when you press the Fn button first, otherwise it is used for the focus point selection. That was wonderful, I used it all the time, moving around the focus point. With the K-5 I wouldn't even notice if it only had the center point AF, I'm very rarely using the other ones.

I was just wondering this because I'm still running the original firmware without any issues I can detect, and I'm thinking if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I will probably never use any lens newer than the ones I've already got (if anything, the reverse), so why change anything at all?

Because to me the double function selection - af point selection and drive/flash/wb/profiles is annoying. Because I'd like to be able to switch back to af selection without removing my eye from the visor, without having to press ok for 3/4 of a second or so, without having to remember, after choosing a wb, to press ok 3/4 of a second just to make sure I'm in af selection mode again. It's not fluid enough. I've had a Sony a700 and a Canon 40d and the separate joystick for af selection was, on both, a very useful tool. If the k5 doesn't have one, why not solve it through firmware? Like Nikon d7000 or so? Like the ks-2? It's not like it would hurt the firmware... I've always gone for a newer version of the firmware - except for a Panasonic g1, where I could not agree with their decision of supporting only original batteries. And I can honestly say that on the Sony the improvements were important.

So, the answer is why not? Why not improve my camera through firmware, in a way that makes my shooting more fluent? They've made it for another of their cameras, so it's possible. The "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule of thumb has no place here, only in your decision not to adopt a such newer firmware version (that will never come out, for sure).

Older Pentax models, even entry level ones have that. There was a Fn button, only if you press Fn and then left you would enter WB, if you press left directly the focus point will move one to the left. That was way, way better than the current system.

Pentax doesn't improve cameras after they are released, only other brands do.

What is worse is that the K-3 is the same. And I have little hope that they will improve the successor. Pentax can be extremely bone headed and ignorant of customer feedback. It's their way or the highway.
