What size screw for K-5 Tripod?

Hi I've just bought my first K5 and just want to know if the Tripod screw I need is 3/4" please?
New to DSLR's loved my original Pentax K1000 so will no doubt have lots of questions coming and new to this forum as well so G'day from down under all, happy shooting!

Welcome to the forums!

The tripod screw diameter for the K-5 is 1/4" (standard for pretty much all SLR and DSLR cameras I know of, including your old K1000). Hope this helps

Technically, the typical tripod mount screw is 1/4-20 UNC (that's 1/4" diameter screw with 20 threads per inch of the UNC thread design which is the coarse thread variant of the Unified Thread Standard). It's the most common thread for 1/4" screws so it's easy to find.

Most of the tripod heads I've seen have about 3/16" of screw length protruding from the head plate.

You're probably confused with the tripod's base screw which is probably 3/8". this is the screw that the tripod head is mounted to - like a ball head. A 1/4" screw is used to mount the camera to a mounting plate, which then is mounted to the head. So like @BigMackCam said, 1/4" is virtually standard for all cameras - not just SLRs.

If you are looking at a tripod that doesn't have this configuration - tripod, head, and mounting plate - then don't buy it. Its probably not very good.

PS: Congratulation on getting a K-5! Its a great camera. I'm even using it for Astrophotography and it excels at it.
