I havent been following the developments much and search does not seem to answer my question

Is the sensor used in the K-r the same as in the K-x with slightly more expanded ISO?

Sony has been making minor updates and improvements to their 12mp EXMOR sensor ever since it showed up in the D300. The D90 sensor was an evolution from that, the K-x sensor was a further evolution, and this K-r sensor should be a further one.

The K-r Sensor is the newest edition of this sensor and the last edition.

How do you know it's the last 12mp sensor they'll make? They ended up recycling that 6mp design with various refinements for a looooooooooooong time... the 12mp seems poised to fit into a similar role if you ask me.
