Mind you the quick and dirty test images were shot using the camera's default settings with no noise reduction or image sharpening done during post processing. No doubt using any noise reduction algorithm from Adobe Camera Raw, Lighroom 3 or any third-party noise reduction software will improve the high-iso images considerably.

Well, we can stop saying no one has held these cameras yet. Looking forward to seeing the K5 in action.

Looks good, images at least. That camera is fuggin ugly as hell. Those 12,800 ISO looks pretty similar to my 7D 12,800 images.

The test images look AT LEAST 2 stops better than my K20D. In fact the iso10000 is similar the closest to my iso1600.

Now, what will we bitch about next? if the K5 matches up to this, our (mine) high iso complaints are answered for at least 6 months.

CREAMPUFF....thank you for posting these.

To all those who will now junk their K7, please send them to me. I will pay bottom dollar for them!

Max ISO with noise reduction applied

Image from the K-r shot at ISO 25600 and converted to black and white in ACR. Maximum luminance and color noise reduction applied. Resized with no sharpening or other post processing done.
I'm shooting at f/8 and the shutter speed is 1/400 second and it's at night... whoa!

Wow those look great. The only thing I am upset about is this: You have the K-r AND K-5 in hand and you didn't crack out the magnesium monster first?!

The amount of detail in that converted file showing up on the label (albeit a downsized image) is pretty impressive to say the least. As a B&W image, I would be hard pressed to pick this out against 3200 from the K20 or K7.

Bottomline is the K-r is a quantum leap ahead in image quality. Junk your existing cameras and upgrade. As a former K-7 user, I'll honestly say there is no reason to keep it any longer because it has just been outclassed where it counts - image quality.
By "image quality" you mean "high ISO image quality", correct? My K20D has nicer IQ than my K-x at lower ISO values. I'll be looking closely at the full range of sensitivities with the new cameras, not just high ISO. I'm also very interested in colour performance and DR, and I don't mean measurements, I mean colours and expanded DR that I can see. The supposed high DR of the K-x hasn't shown itself in my day to day photos, and I much prefer the colour rendition of the K20.

Is the K-R a vast improvement over the K-x?
I'm thinking of buying a K-x for about 400 dollars and I was wondering if I should just save more money and buy the K-R

All the original RAW images are resized to jpegs 900 pixels on the long side (quality 8), they have not been cropped or straightened at all.

Sunsets, high dynamic range scenes, comes out much better with my k-x than with my k20d
