First off, thanks for the work you have done here. Looks great.
Creampuff, Frank, how is the noise on the K-r shutter? Is it quiet like the K-7 or rowdy like the K-x?
K-r shutter sound is closer to K-x but a tad quieter.
I was informed the K-5 is a little quieter than the already uber quiet K-7.

Prism shape is different compared to the K-x.
There is also the new AF assist light located above my thumb.

The camera comes with the slim D-LI109 lithium ion battery as standard.
Although the battery slot shows the outline for AA batteries, you'll need the optional AA Battery Holder D-BH109 before you can use those AA batteries.
Any four AA batteries (Lithium, Ni-MH rechargeable, alkaline) can be used.

Thanks for the time to post all the pics.
I was thinking about buying a K-7...now have to consider a K-x or even a K5 as an upgrade from my trusty K10.
Pentax has hit the mak with the K-x, and I can't wait to see the images from the K-5.
Sorry, new to photography so it's a silly question.

But isn't K 7 better/newer than the K x? It's a lot more expensive, at least. From the last page posts here it sounds like the K 7 is worse?

I certainly buy into this new feature allowing the choice of AF.S focus priority or Release priority.
This means that you will have more keepers but at the risk of losing track of the subject.
Great for slow moving or stationary subjects.

Another great thing is the AF-C choice of Focus priority vs. FPS priority.
In my opinion, I would certainly make good use of the Focus Priority feature for BIF and other fast moving subjects.
With a high FPS already in place, if one makes good efforts to focus properly to start with, the FPS would not be that dramatically reduced ... I think.
The option screen here shows " ... focus tracking on subject takes priority over maintaining capture framerate."
We shall soon see how much "tracking" this AF is capable of.

This is what the K5 boasts as well.
Remains to see which of the two will perform better during AF-C (focus priority).

That's all very good news to me and,
Thanks again for all of the info!

Thanks Denis for the dinner and heads up

Here you go:

Hands-on with K-r :) - ClubSNAP Photography Forums
Frank, great K-r photos and fun to look at. Beautiful kids you have!

One minor question... Did your friend's ( Denis? ) nose hair go at ISO 6400, or was it the camera's NR which made it disappear?

The K7 and Kx are both great, just different (I have one of each at the moment).

The K7 is a more solid, well-built, weather-resistant body that offers several features the K-x doesn't. It also has a better LCD screen, AF assist-light, optional grip, Li-ion battery among other things. The K-x, on the other hand, does have the edge in high ISO IQ, especially when comparing JPEGs. The Kx is also small, lighter and about half the price of the K7. So depending on what your priorities, you may prefer one over the other.

Ah, makes sense. Interesting about the ISO difference. Looking at DPreview comparisons of these cameras, the sensor specs are identical. Couldn't they have put the same sensor into the K7 and maintain the ISO advantage over similar entry-level dSLRs?

Or uhh, maybe I'm confusing K7 and Kr

The K-X was a newer camera than the K-7. K-7 was also kind of partnership with Samsung.
The K-X use a Sony sensor

Pentax USA. Where did you get that date from? Everything I've heard directly from Pentax, previously, was late Oct/early Nov.
I think that was the date when K5 becomes available in Japan. I just assume that we will have it in US at same time. Maybe I was wrong.

Here are a few sample photos converted from RAW, no other post processing done:

And 100% crops of the above photos:

ISO 1600:

All taken by K-r and a DA35 macro.

As for me, ISO1600 from RAW is not bad. But I see the traces of IQ's degradation. As for colours - rather CMOS type.

ISO3200 and above. It's not acceptable for me. I'm perfectionist.

Could you be so kind tо upload RAW files from low ISO (100-200) to somewhere to download?
