fair point about SR, but I shoot pentax and canon- and my canon takes pentax, nikon, m42, olympus and many other lenses
the k mount compatibility is not that much of a selling point anymore, yes you get automatic stop down on a pentax body, but unless you're shooting f11 in the dark you can still see fine on the canon (and the canon viewfinder > pentax viewfinder)

also on a full frame canon the noise control is 1 or 2 stops better than the k5 (yes, it really is), which counter acts the in body SR

and this is the kicker, flash control- you get full E-ttl automatic flash control when using pentax lenses on a canon body- you don't even get that on pentax!!



although for the price of the canon I could have bought 3 k5's,
the canon is also huge, unsubtle, and heavy

so they both have their merits- but for me, pentax's strength is not absolute performance, but performance at a price- ergo you're likely to see more issues. If you can afford the canon system then go for it, but if not, then stick with pentax. Just depends on what type of photography you're going to be doing.

Good luck, Deimos! Asking a seller to do something like that is something we should probably all be doing. I'm guessing that you didn't have a local camera shop with Pentax in stock?

There are several but they are all well over $150 more and only sold kits :P

too right, I ordered some umbrella's off ebay from hong kong- saved about £10, figured that 7 days wasn't too long to wait
2 months later and they're still 'in transit'.

Returning lenses/equipment is such a PITA that it's less hassle to buy instore, plus I see the excess cost as 'the price you have to pay to be allowed to touch/experience', I think i'd gladly pay a bit extra to keep camera stores open, I'd hate to live in a world where there were no physical retail stores

however i have seen far worse in my days in consumer electronics and over the years i have had at this point 9 pentax cameras and haven't had any failures at all, though my k10d was bought as a refurb so i am aware they exist. as mentioned before this is a peril of mass production. I've seen numerous model defects in all brands in the 25 years i spent in the industry including some very respected very expensive high end brands. just look at the leic digitals they have had numerous issues on the m8, and some with the m9. this is not a camera the dealer could just exchange in most cases either as they are like hen's teeth. I hop the third time is indeed a charm for you.

how in the world could a hand manufactured and factory tested camera leave the factory with issues? or am I to understand that individual manufacture of Leica cameras has given way to a mass manufacture? that would be rather ridiculous at that price point.

leicas are not completely hand made, and leica doen's manufacture the electronics end they outsource it as far as i know. not mass manufacture , but still has an assembly process, and defects happen in electronics it's an unfortunate fact of life

I havn't had any truly serious problems other than minor front focusing with my K-r. However, my camera will probably be serviced for sensor cleaning as well as AF calibration soon...

Nonetheless, my K-r is perfectly usable. I tend to be very picky about my equipment.

had the camera out last night in low light situations at -15C shooting at 1600 ISO. camera was fantastic, low-light is so good. Pretty decent in -15 degrees as well!
