Just to show that the K-5 crowd can't have all the fun, here's my "String of Crud" saga, K-r style!

Evidence included:
Dirty Sensor #1 - brand new Pentax K-r [@ f/40] | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
(yes that's the peak of a tree down in l/h corner to indicate orientation)

Thankfully the viewfinder in it looks OK, so far anyway, unlike the bloody K-x I bought earlier in the year which had the usual dose of fly poop specs, some mirror dust, as well as its own dirty sensor.

Maybe we all need to take our own brooms to the Hoya Phillipines assy plant and give the $#%*&@% place a good sweep over. The company obviously has a pretty serious QC hygiene problem that needs addressing.

It seems to me you are trumpeting your 'problem' for no reason. What you have there isn't anything like the 'string of blobs' I saw on the sensor of a friend's K-5--it's just dust that you might have let get onto the sensor when mounting the lens. If you are not quick enough with changing lenses, dust will get on the sensor. Nothing serious, really. Just check out the numerous threads on the topic of removing dust from the sensor.

We can't expect the Philipino factory floor to be as sterile as a state of the art operating theatre, so we may have to expect our sensors to need cleaning even if straight from the manufacturing plant. Give it a clean and enjoy the fine camera.

Hehe, yes surely warranty would cover it, and reluctantly I'll have to go through the motions, but I'm hoping the obligatory phone call to the right area might catch some smart tech assistant who will give the nod to me cleaning it myself.

The problem is covering yourself, and navigating around the bloody red tape.

Yes it is pitiful in 2010, and there is no acceptable excuse for this simple QC lack on such large scale no matter what or how loud the usual apologists choose to blabber.
Pathetic as they are predictable!

What they fail to understand is that it's so important that these things always get officially reported so that Hoya have that valuable customer feedback to work on, and know where and what needs improvement in their systems. The sooner the better.

They don't want their their Rep destroyed - and it's esp disappointing when the base products themselves are so good in comparison to most competitor equivalents.

If it were mine, I just simply wipe the dust off, quietly, and not letting the whole world know about it. After all it's not a big deal and also I wouldn't be so sure whether it's manufacturer/dealer/my fault that whatever-it-is is there in the first place.

Did you get unit from a sealed box? Have you ever considered that it had been tested by the dealer/store? Or some other customer before you?

The boxes are not (factory) sealed, unfortunately, so there is no guarantees there on any possible circumstance that you mention.
And we all know how sales drones like to hand to new delicate cameras to any clot that walks in for the "Here, pat the cute new puppy" (so you fall in love and buy it) exercise.

So being the skeptic, I did coax the salesnerk to open it himself in front of me for check of completeness so I wouldn't have to return if something was missing, and all components were and appeared to be "factory wrapped" with none of those usual subtle indicators whatsoever that the box or any content article had been mauled or even un-rewrapped (as often happens).

That's all hypothetical conjecture anyway. The item was sold to me new and it should be and work reasonably blemish free; in that respect it should perform to offer it's full capabilities as designed and expected, that requirement applies under law too, it's not just my 'opinion'.

But truth is I couldn't give two stuffs if something I buy has been "pre-owned and or tested", has minor paw-prints, etc., so long as the bastard was complete as handed over and, that it works for me, fully.

My intention was to acquire a good camera, not a piece of Apple iWank jewelry!

Fwiw: Sensor is near spotless now Btw. After inspecting it appeared safe to give it a try and the trusty O-ICK1 (almost) did its magic as well as it could.
Only remains is one minute sized, plus another a bit more obnoxious stain spots, that coincidentally exist stubbornly in almost same place as two slightly larger more persistent ones still do in my K-x that I've never been able to dislodge from new.
(perceptible at around f/22~ish and beyond, so still a problem for my use, albeit lessened - wouldn't bother moth peeps needs though.)

I rang the National Distributor prior, and didn't get official permission to clean it myself (understandable) but he seemed cooperative when I mentioned that I'd attacked my K-x with success before and was trying to avoid bothering them with extra workload pre holiday season.

Can't blame them really, and I strongly advise caution to anyone myself too, considering that Pentax sensors are float-mounted and is so easy to disturb if too much force applied to the applicator.

The K-r's a nice toy Btw, not too unhappy that I bought it in preference to alternatives I had under consideration.

Sure was.

IMO only a very brave fool would not consider that for inclusion in any good menu.

There are just too many fantastic cameras, all with their own unique subtle weaknesses, available to choose from these days!

This is unbelievable... I though K5 owners were being super-anal searching for spots at f22-f32... Well, looks like K-r owners have won the contest by finding dust at f40... considering that in real-life nobody with brains would close down a lens beyond f13, that is quite an acheivement... damn, after first couple of lens changes you gonna have 10X more dust that that... Dust is as much of a reality as the fact that one has to wipe his as$ after taking a dump... Stop measurbating, go rent a couple of naked models and do some shooting! It will do you some good...

f 40 really, can't imagine a reason for ever shooting this stopped down (diffraction would be a big issue if there was something besides blue sky IE a real world image)
