K-r w/ 18-55mm and 55-300mm for $749 on Amazon...

I was trying really hard to not buy it so soon (or just save up money to get the K-5), but I couldn't pass up the deal.

You have to get the one sold by Amazon (it's currently out of stock), but $749 for both lenses and body is hard to pass up. Make sure you don't just add the one you see on the site to cart cause that's sold by some other store (and not $749).

Do a Google search for Amazon promo code. There was a $10 promo code for any digital camera over $200 IIRC. Makes for a better deal if it's still around.

I saw your posting and ordered the K-r lens combo the same day, the 22nd. I have not received any update from Amazon about expected delivery time and I'm wondering if others who ordered earlier (or perhaps later!) have been receiving their orders or notices.

Thanks for the notice of the deal, it seems at least $100-150 less expensive than others, and they seem out of stock, too.

I got mine, but I ordered before it was showing OOS. Still testing, I was able to open it only yesterday. So far, all good. Mine seems to focus well (and fast too), exposure is good. The kit lens is like my other kit lens, and the 55-300mm seems to be quite good. I like it.

Glad you received the kit and it seems to be in good order. I hope Amazon gets a shipment out before I do something impulsive such as ordering the 18-55 kit (or the 18-55 and 50-200 kit) and then building from there. I'm actually interested in some of the more modestly priced primes, such as the 25mm, 35mm macro, and 40mm ones.

I ordered when it was showing out of stock so there was no estimate of delivery. I just got an e-mail this morning with a delivery estimate of January 04 2011 - January 10 2011. Hopefully my K-r will also show no focus issues.

My replacement K-r 18-55 and 55-300mm kit from Amazon shipped today, after being on backorder since December 14th when I filed for the replacement (faulty E-dial on the one I purchased Black Friday). That leads me to believe they got a few K-r 300mm kits in today or yesterday and they sold back out instantly, or perhaps all of the shipment was allocated toward replacements for those who received faulty K-r kits last month.

Unfortunately it is going for $850 from Amazon right now. Says they only have 5 more in stock. Want one but am going to wait until price gets down to $750 or less again. Maybe it is just too popular right now. Am not really in that much of a hurry.

nice, lucky you, mine shipped today and *should* get here tomorrow even though UPS says scheduled for 1/3 for some reason.

The price is back to $849, btw...glad some of us got in on it.

My replacement kit arrived today. I'm much happier with this one so far. Not only does the E-dial work better, but the focus seems to be spot on through initial testing. I'm using AWB in artificial light and there doesn't seem to be any missed focus.

Sjwolfhope - Ohh, you poor old thing...! As in - you'll have to wait until the now K-R with 18-55mm AND the L 55-300mm kit - comes down from the "too high" price of SD$850.00 to $750.00...

Struth...! Waddaya-really-want? You folk in the US are already getting a real Pentax 55-300mm, if L model - lens "free" - on our prices, anyway...!

In Sydney the K-R with just the kit Pentax 18-55mm is $899.00.....

And no, our dollar isn't the Aussie-Peso to the USD it used to be - the AUD is above USD parity at present - US$1.01.7c.

As for the L 55-300mm kits - no, the shop (where I've dealt for over 3 years) - tells me that's a "US special" - we'll never get it here. They will however happily sell you the full ED version 55-300mm - for a mere $670.00... And that's a frac more than US$670.00.

I don't have my K-R quite yet - and they're not offering the Sigma 17-70mm as a kit lens for a few bucks more than the kit 18-55, yet. You have to buy a K-X to get that "offer".

At prices here I suss that they'll have K-Xs on the shelf for a long time yet.... A K-X with Pentax 18-55mm is $659.00 - with Sigma 17-70mm, $729.00....

Of course - if you like "vintage" Pentaxes "brand new" - you can have a K-M with kit 18-55mm for just $799.00....

Nope, not an error - K-M with 18-55 is $140.00 more than a K-X with that lens - and just $100.00 under a K-R with ditto....

So the idea of getting "older" or "runout" models as cheap bargains here is a no-no....

Actually - the idea of a very good condition used K20D with a 90-day Shop Warranty - for quite a lot less than the K-R's $899.00 here - is starting to look attractive...

A K20D will use the M42s and K-mounts I already have - starting with an as-new SMC Tak f/1.8 55mm, etc, just as "easily" as the later-and-lighter bodies.

And an M42-something at 300mm reach just has to cost rather less than $670.00 for the Pentax ED 55-300, here....

Yes, I do do already have an excellent condition K-mount Sigma "worst lens they ever made" 100-300mm 4.5-6.7 DL - which will "make-do" until I can afford something better...

If it really IS that bad - my Canon SX10 and Fuji HS10 will just have to fill-in the 300mm-reach "hole" until I do.....

Dave.

Dave,
Just have a look at the prices charged by DCW (Digital Camera Warehouse) it is next best thing to extortion.
They charge like wounded bulls.

I have bought all my gear overseas and saved a heap.

And to think our retailers are complaining that more goods are bought overseas than in Aus. When will somebody put the brain into gear and work it out!!

SORRY - you got me there. Promise I will keep my mouth shut and not complain about the US prices. But will still wait until I get the price I want - just not b*t*h on here about the prices.
Happy New Year - it is still one hour to go here in the Eastern US.
