Avoiding "No card in the camera"?

If there's no card, the camera lets me turn it on and snap a photo. Then it shows on the LCD but warns "no card in the camera". I am wondering how to make it warn me better beforehand, if possible? Otherwise I have to remember to look for the number of remaining photos all the time. With no card it shows "----".

I've been known to shoot with no card in the camera but I think the only fix is a good self-administered dope slap.

Not feasible on the k_x . On the k-5, the camera will not turn on
