Fall Fun

It looks a little underexposed to me. But we were under a tree. Any suggestions?

Looks fine to me

I think you mean him/his face is underexposed. The thing is, if you look at the whole image, the camera has exposed for everything in the frame. The face, the leaves, the bright grass in the back, the road and all the light and shadow in-between.

Fixes?

Well, you could have kept the framing the same, and slowed down the shutter speed (or ramped up the iso etc) to correctly expose for the face, but the light on the leaves and also the grass in the back would be blown out.

You could have recomposed the shot so that the subject was taking up more of the frame, and also so that your avoiding those light patches of grass in the background - re expose for the subject, and there you go.

You could have kept the framing the same, and used the built in flash to fill in the foreground. Keep the exposure the exact same settings, and adjusted the flash power until it looks evenly exposed. This can be tricky though - the distance you are from the subject, and also the ambient light, can mean you could have not enough flash power, or too much. If it's too much even on lowest power, hold you hand/fingers or something see-through a couple inches in-front of the flash to try and diffuse it. If you don't have enough flash power...oh well.

Or finaly, move him! :P Not like in a posing way, but you can see you have patches of light in front by the leaves, and you also have the sun shining on to the face from behind. By just gettin im to play in a different spot or turning slightly, it might have lit up the face/body more.

Of course, any of those sugestions might not have worked, and would all create a similar but different effect, but it's worth experimenting.

Great photos

Wow, these photos are terrific. Could you guys post your exif data? These are really encouraging as far as quality. I'm wondering what lenses were used with these photos? Kit or other?
