New K-r owner with a question

Good evening everyone!
I just opened my box which delivered my new K-r, two kit lenses and LR3. My question is if I install LR3 should I also load the Pentax software, or would it be useless?
Thanks! I look forward to visiting this board often.

Lightroom really would replace it. Just make sure you update to the latest release (I think 3.3) so it has support for the K-r.

I have both installed, and I think I have opened the Pentax Utility twice.

Never used Lightroom, but the Pentax software allows you to "extract a jpg" from the PEF file for a quick look in a handier viewer, copy and paste file name roots without overwriting the extensions, and creates a CSV of exif data which you can copy into a spreadsheet.

I don't think I ever used the Pentax software that came with my Pentax k-x, but all my images are previewed correctly in Lightroom. I have used Lightroom 2 and now 3. It easily opens all my DNG raw files and gives a detailed preview of each photo. Also, a bonus is that the updated version of Lightroom 3 has a range of Pentax lens profiles, which will "fix" distortions from any photo taken from the respective lens.

The only problem I have with Lightroom 3 is that it is a memory hog and it takes a long time to preview my photos. I guess my laptop is just too slow for it right now, but you might not have that problem.

I recommend just to use Lightroom or even Picasa over the included software. They're much better and full featured

I have both installed but haven't used the Pentax software very much. Lightroom works great.

Thanks so much for all of the helpful responses! I think I'll skip the Pentax software for now and see how Lightroom runs on my computer (I have a 10 month old mac so it shouldn't be a problem I hope).
