What to do...Need some advice please

My istDS crapped out, CRIS wanted $400 to repair, so I sold it for parts. I still have my 18-55 and 55-200 DA lenses. I was considering buying the K-r with the kit lenses and getting the 18-55 and 55-300, but it looks like they are the DA-L lenses in the kit and not the DA's.

Over the weekend I was able use a D3100 with the 55-300 VR lens, and must say I got some fantastic indoor hockey shots (I was right at ice level). I need to shoot lots of sports (Hockey, Lacrosse, Horseback Riding) for the kids.

I was considering selling the DA 55-200, keeping the DA 18-55, and getting the K-r body with the DA 55-300........and eventually spring for a f2.8 200??

I seem to have more choices with Nikon, but it seems like I may as well as well spring for the D90 if I am going that route...$$$$.

Anyone have any thoughts?

What about a K10, K20, K7 with the 2.8 200 would make a wonderful set-up that you are used to.

If D3100 worked well for you, faster K-r should work even better.

K-x or D90. K-x is cheaper and smaller; D90 has more bells and whistles, better AF, and focusing points.

cjhrph, I know the D3100 seemed like a much better camera, but keep in mind that you aren't comparing Nikon to Pentax. You are really comparing 2004 tech to 2010 tech. DSLR technology has come a looooooooong way since the istDS came out, and every year it just gets better. As elho cid states above, pretty much ANY modern DSLR you could have tried at the hockey game would have outperformed your expectations of the .istDS. Don't get me wrong, Nikons are fine cameras. However, considering you already own some decent glass, why not save a few dollars and just buy an updated Pentax body? That purchase alone would offer you a photographic experience orders of magnitude better than what you have been experiencing. If you like shooting sports, buying the 55-300mm lens + body would be an incremental step in the right direction, too. Keep in mind that @ 300mm, the lens is a bit slower than your 200mm, but at least it gives you more options!

I would get the body only, and a 70-200 f2.8. The new kit lenses of any variety will not help with hockey.

Thanks for all for the help. I'm thinking what I really want to do is sell the 18-55 and 55-200 DA lenses and buy the 18-135 F3.5 DA, and the Sigma F2.8 70-200, as well as the K-r body.

By the way, not to digress, but the Pentax customer service was absolutely nasty to me on the phone over my istDS. Not that they owed me anything, but it was obvious that they could have cared less if I stayed in Pentax or moved to on one of the competitors...

Again, thanks for the help.

That sounds like a solid lens setup! Take advantage of our B&H offer in my signature if you'd like, and you'll be able to sell your old gear on the forum.
