Pentax K-r, wide angle lens help!

I am n00ber than n00b when it comes to photography and lenses. Please bear with me.

I recently picked up a Pentax K-r. I fell in love, yadda yadda yadda and wanted a wide angle lens. More than a few Google searches recommended the Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC lens. I loved the samples photos I found online and purchased. Until...

The lens is too big? I know the K-r is a tiny camera but I thought it took some normal sized lenses. Help? Am I putting this on wrong? Are there special lenses that the K-r needs due to its smaller size? If I bought the wrong one, can someone point me in the right direction for some quality lenses for this camera?

Sorry & thanks!

As long as you have the proper k-mount on the sigma, it will work on your camera. Lenses come in a lot of different sizes depending on the focal length and speed of the lens. I have some long lenses that are big and with my K-5 attached it looks like the camera was an after thought. It all works just fine though.

The outside of the camera doesn't have anything 'really' to do with this inside as far as the sensor goes. My daughter has this lens for her Canon. It is a great wide angle lens. Just get it.

That lens (sigma 10-20mm) will definitely fit on your K-r (just as long as it's in K mount, like BCB mentioned). However, it will be significantly larger than the kit lens you're use to (I assume).

Is the k-mount something that I need to purchase separately from the lens or is it something that just comes built-on or with the lens? I've already purchased the lens, it just seems to mismatch my camera body when I try to attach it.

Can someone please explain the k-mount further? Is that something I need to purchase separately or is that built-on to the actual lens? Thanks!

Look on the box the lens came in. Does it happen to say Nikon or Canon on it somewhere?

built into the lens. as long as you buy the one labeled for pentax (as opposed to for canon etc). if you mean the lens itself is huge, yep wide angle zooms can be very large. if you want wide angle without the huge size the DA 15 limited should fit the bill (won't give the really wide effect of the 10-20 at 10 though)
Welcome to the wonderful world of LBA
p.s. I hear the tamron 10-24 is a pretty nice lens as well, also pretty big though

No, the K-mount is not some extra thing you buy - it's the *type* of mount used on the lens. Third party lenses - ones from not made by Pentax but rather by companies like Sigma or Tamron - are made available in different mounts for different camera - K-mount for Pentax, EF for Canon, etc. If you bought the Canon or Nikon version of the lens, it won't fit your Pentax - you need to buy the Pentax version. And that will either be marked Pentax or K-mount.

Ok, there we have it. Thanks guys. It says "for Canon AF". Oof. I suppose this means I'll need to find a way to sell this expensive thing and pick up the proper "for Pentax" lens. Sigh.

oof is right, where did you buy, most dealers would let you exchange it but the odd one may charge restocking. hard way to learn the lesson
if you are buying used keep an eye on the forum marketplace. some good product there always

May be you can return it to the store you bought it from ,and request a replacement with the pentax mount.
by the way ,I have the K-r and the 10-24 Tamron, which is a very decent lens as well.

Ouch, I was sort of afraid that might have been the problem. Well, experience costs I guess. I'd try to exchange it. Best of luck (seriously) with that.
