Supported external flashes

Hey there,

I am looking at getting an external flash for my Pentax K-r, but I was wondering, does it have to be a Pentax branded external flash, or can it be another brand? I am on a budget and could really use some help.

Thanks,

Jacob

I bought a bower 926 flash and it was terrible, even worst, look like it works great on k-x but no in k-r.
In the end bought the samsung version of pentax af360, its fantastic now.

there are plenty to third party flashes available for pentax. there are cheap stinkers like the one the above user has while there are some that are just simply better than the pentax flashes. What kind of flash are you looking for? there's pttl capable models, manual only, etc

if you dont mind a manual only flash, i can reccomend the yongnuo yn560 flash. goes for about 70-80 bucks off ebay and amazon and works great. i love them so much, i have 2 and im thinking about buying a third atm

I bought the Metz 50 AF-1 and love it. Good thing with the Metz flashes is that there is a USB port that allows you to update the firmware (there has already been one update for the 50 AF-1). This flash also has a swivel head which is good for bouncing off the ceiling when going portraits. It was cheaper than the Pentax AF540. It support wireless as well as a slave. You use the onboard pop up as the master.

Glad to hear of success with the Metz. I'm planning on getting the 44 AF-1 when dim light starts to become more of a concern (yay summer!). Don't think I need a super powerful flash -- for my use, the on-board one has been fine, aside from the fact that it makes things look bad and my main lens is big and castas shadows.
