Hi,
I can take up to 400 shots (but never less than 250).
Display of my K-r most of the time is turned off.

Yes. AF.C is more power hungry - particulalry when set for priority on focus instead of speed when shooting continuous. AF would also be more power hungry than MF.

so that means 500+ shots only with MF not with AF

Your shot count on the Lithium battery seems low. I'd try another or get an adapter and try AA's (recommend Eneloops).

My K-r comfortably gets about 400 per full charge too; on AF-S, no pop-up flash, no Live View either.

Whereas it's a bit more finicky with the AA-battery adapter coupled with some 3-year old eneloops, giving no more than 300 shots usually.

It's hard to say, as it depends a lot on the way you use the camera, how much time you spend reviewing pictures on it, and especially if you're using the flash. Shooting with flash seems to cut what I can take by about half, maybe more. As others mentioned, Live View will also drain it quick.

The best solution is to get another battery or two, keep them charged, and then you can swap them out in the field with little hassle. You might find that your original battery wasn't in good shape when you compare it to new ones, and if so, you know the problem was with that.

I've been shooting vacation resorts lately for websites and I always come home with between 600 to 800 shots, on the same battery charge.
I use external flash and auto focus only to setup the shot, then I switch to manual focus for consistency between shots.
I always have the AA adapter with me with some rechargeables just in case but so far, I only had to use them once, when I was over 900 shots.

A battery holder for AAs is fine, provided you get good quality rechargeable AAs to go with. The most popular here by a margin is the Sanyo Eneloops.

Shouldn't matter which battery holder you get. It's a pretty simple device.

Doesn't necessarily have to be Sanyo Eneloops.
As long as they are marked "Hybrid" or "Pre-charged", they should all be the same.
You can get them as Rayovac Hybrid, Kodak Pre-charged, and there are others I can't really recall.
I both have the Eneloops and the Rayovac.
