Flash question....Vivitar 5200

Is this compatible with the K-r? I've just been offered a brand new, still in the box model but don't want to say yes if it is going to be a white elephant!

Pretty sure it won't work with the auto settings on your camera but should work as a manual flash if the trigger voltage isn't too high. Here is a link to check the trigger voltages for a lot of different flash units including the one in question.

16v or less is considered safe for the K-r, afaik. The lower the better, I guess. Some of the old flashes go up to a crazy 300 volts or so, and that could fry your camera.

Doesn't the Vivitar 5200 have interchangeable modules for different brands? See if you can find a manual for this flash and read about it. I don't own this flash, but I do have other Vivitar flashes (3700 & 4600). I've noticed odd behavior when used with a module for a different brand, but I can't remember what brand it was, sorry.
It might work in the flash's auto thyristor mode with your camera set to manual mode and flash synch shutter speed. You will need to set the ISO and aperture manually on the camera. Read the manual for the 5200.
