About diffusers, try something inexpensive first. My local arts & crafts store has this perforated plastic, only 49 cents for an 11"X17" sheet:



With a few $ and some creativity, you can have a bunch of diffusers:

It has a larger screen than a film tube (maybe 4x the surface area facing the subject), so yeah, it would be somewhat better I think. It also doesn't trap heat around the flash itself, which is a plus if you're shooting repeatedly. You might remember that thread about the guy who melted his K-7 flash by shooting too much too fast. It wouldn't surprise me at all if smaller amounts of heat still put unnecessary wear and tear on the flash.
