Would IR pictures of your house show where you needed more insulation?
IR pictures of your house would absolutely show you the areas where you have heat escaping from your building envelope... However all of the IR photography discussed here (whether it's using a filter in front of an unmodified camera, or a camera with the internal filter replaced with an IR pass) is more accurately described as NIR, or Near Infrared. This is the range of light just barely outside of the visible spectrum at the red end. I don't know where the sensitivity of the Pentax sensors starts to fall off, but the NIR range is from about 800-2500nm. Thermal imaging cameras use spectrum at the other end of the infrared range, starting at about 8000nm.

Correct, however Silicon based imaging sensors lose their sensitivity to Ir at frequencies beyond of 1000nm - to image even longer wavelengths you have to use specialised GaS* based imaging sensors.
