prime lenses no longer working

since i started using the k-r i have been able to use my old prime lenses (smc 1:2.8 24mm, smc 1:1.4 50mm) with out any issues.

that is until recently. i now no longer have the option of choosing the focal length when i switch my camera on and none of the functions work with these two lenses.

i'm a beginner and therefore stumped. any ideas?

Do you have the aperture ring enabled?

One of many...

One of many things to remember along the way. Have fun.

I still think that it is way cool to get focus confirmation using manual focus lenses.

And shake reduction.

And being able to meter using ANY k-mount or M42 lens.

I shoot with a K20 and a Nikon D80 and the Nikon will NOT allow you to meter with earlier manual Nikon mount lenses.

Agreed.

The Pentax cameras do allow the best backwards compatibility (AFAIK, can't speak for Olympus, Fuji, Canon, Sony and others.)

I believe some of the more expensive Nikons do allow metering but with Pentax, they ALL do I believe.

Unlike much of the competition, ANY Pentax-compatible (and many non-compatible) lenses can be used on Pentax dSLRs. Unlike some of the competition, Pentax dSLRs can meter ANY lens used on them. For all except M-type lenses, ALL manual lenses will meter in Av or M mode. For stop-down metering with M-type lenses, use M mode and the Green button. (M-type lenses have an aperture-linkage flag but no mount contacts.)

I mentioned compatibility because it DOESN'T MATTER! I've chopped Nikon, Olympus, Exakta, and Contax-Yashica lenses to fit onto Pentax PK bayonet mount; they all meter. I've jammed all sorts of optical materials onto bellows and tubes; they all meter. Reverse a lens; it meters. Break a lens; as long as it's in front of the mount, it meters. Oh yeah, and SR works on all of those too.
