annoying autofocus

after setting it to auto 11 af points, why does it keep on focusing on the center auto focus point and rarely use the other af points? 0.o is it normal?

if the largest thing is in the center it will pick that. i use the select af and move the point around to where i want (at least on the rare occasion i use the AF at all)

Yes that's normal for Pentax. It has a very strong preference for the center point. Other systems have a stronger preference for the closest point and that's much more useful.

Hi.

I have K-r and Tamron SP AF 17-50mm/2.8 Xr Di II.

Auto focus seems to be very strange and better said bad!
9/10 AF 5/11 points uses center point for focusing even there is something nearer the camera. One time I tried to take portrait of my dog very dog sits in the centre of the view finder, then AF focused to a back carpet next to dog! Is it that bad or is it just me (or Tamron?)?

When using auto AF point select I also noticed it is almost always the centre one. The camera doesn't know better, just use select AF in the info menu and try that. You hold the OK button for 1 second to change menus while shooting to select the AF point. But you will notice you will still be using the centre one more often than not.

I always use the center AF, then hold the shutter button down just enough to focus, then recompose the scene before taking the shot!

Can 3rd party glass use the Auto 5 or 11 point AF? Or is it just the center point focus that it is restricted too? I thought i read that in my K-x manual.. haven't checked my K-r manual yet...

Bingo!

K-r Operating Manual Page 130 [center note] - The focus area is fixed to SPOT regardless of setting when using lenses other than DA, DAL, D FA, FA J, FA, or F Lenses.

So this would be a draw back to buying 3rd party AF lenses... Interesting.. So even if I can move the center point say to the right or left, up or down it will alway remain i n the center...

Yes, I don't have any non-Pentax lenses to test it but that is the way I read it.
