How often do you format your SD Card?

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious as to how often people format (or delete pics on) their SD cards. I'm usually of the type that likes to carry around billions of pics on me I format like once every 6 months or so on a 16GB card but then again I haven't been shooting too frequently =(

Every time I put it back in the camera after downloading the images, and I format in the cam. The last time I let the laptop do it, I had a dead 4Gb card.

Every so often depending on my shooting volume. Roughly once every month or two.

I do the same as pixelsaurus. I import everything in to Lightroom, and then put the card right back in the camera to be formatted.

I format everytime I've off loaded images to the computer, probably a couple of times a week at least.

What's the point of formatting so often?

Format Factor

Everytime I load pics to computer the card is returned to camera & formatted.... ready for next shooting.Eliminates the annoyance of doubling up on images already on file.... just find a system that works for you and go with it.

Because FAT is fragile, it doesn't like deletes, it likes starting with a clean slate and then it will likely know where your images are when you ask for them back. If you only delete and don't format it will occasionally throw a tantrum and "forget" where your images are.

I format the card every time I offload to LR, but I do it on the computer. Never once had a problem with a card.

I don't format the card at all... just delete them all occasionally when it gets full or close-to-full. It is in FAT32 format (on my 8, 16 and 32GB card) and if you have one from a good brand, there is no need to worry about.

I also say a prayer to the god of the 0's & 1's every time I remove the card from the camera to plug into the computer. Wouldn't it be great if someone could invent a way where a camera could hold an extra SD card so photos could be written to both in case one card fails

I forgot to mention... for good practice, I try not to interrupt (or remove card) during the read/write (I/O) activities (usually when the light is flashing).

The Nikon D7000 has dual memory card slots.

I've never formatted my cards, I just delete the folder once I confirm the pics have transfered in the computer.
