Long exposure time

I have I Pentax K-r and would like to take long exposure photos. According to the manual the longest preset time is 30 seconds. The other option is to hold the button down this is ok but the exposure could last for minutes.
Can anyone advise if there is a feature to click the shutter open and then click to close after a given time. Any help would be appreciated. Ryalux

Purchase a remote which allows the shutter to be locked open.

Does such a thing exist for the K-r?

For very occasional use some photographer's/gaffer's tape wadded up into a small ball and then pushed down on the shutter release with a longer strip of the tape will work--just keep the lens covered and then remove the lens cover when all is ready. The tape can be removed without leaving a residue.

Pentax makes them, and there are probably third-party options available.

The Kr only has a IR remote capability. There is another option and that is tethering via the USB port. Here is an application that runs on a laptop/netbook (basically running Windows).

The Pentax F infrared remote control will do the trick, then. One press to open the shutter, another press to close it.

The only bad thing about it is that it is small, black, and easy to lose. It would be a good idea to add some brightly colored paint or tape to it so you can find the danged thing.

This is another cheapie item that can be picked up on Ebay, starting at $1.85 shipped (sort by lowest price). Most of them are fine, though with the odds of losing them and the fact that a new one is cheaper than a replacement battery, it makes sense to order a couple (especially at those prices).

Appreciate all the comments and suggestions. Will try the IR to start with. Seems a bit daft to have the sensor on the front of the camera only. As I will be shooting at night in Iceland it shouldn't be to much hassle.
Thanks again.

If you cut a section of aluminum pie plate, or even foil, punch a hole in it and attach it to your tripod, you can make a simple reflector that will let you trigger the camera from behind. I've found that indoors it isn't an issue, the signal bounces off walls and such, but outside you might need something like this.
