How to Use Catch In Focus

Ever since I started using manual focus lenses, I've been trying to get my camera to use Catch in Focus. Up until now, I've had no success. I've searched high and low for how to use the feature, but I've had no success. I've been a little embarrassed to ask for help since every time I read about catch in focus, it seems like something that is incredibly easy to do, but I think it's time to swallow my pride and just ask for help.

I've set the camera to manual focus, enabled "catch in focus" in the menu and still nothing. I don't know if my camera has to be in some specific mode. Does it work in Av, Tv, and M? or does it only work in one mode? I've tried with the pressing the shutter button halfways while I manually focus the lens and nothing happens. The camera never take a picture. Is there something I'm missing here? It seems like this is supposed to be something that is really easy to do, but I just can't get my Kr to fire. Is there a Catch in Focus guide? I've looked in the manual and it doesn't really explain it all that well (unless I missed something).

Thanks ahead of time.

You need to have focus set to AF-S, not manual. You need to press the shutter all the way and the picture will snap when the focus sensor senses you have reached focus. I believe that you also need to have the shutter set to focus priority. It should work in any mode, but it might not work if you have the exposure parameters so out of whack that a relatively decent exposure is impossible. I may be missing something else, but I am not sure.

Good luck.

Enable CIF in menu. Set AF to AF.S. The metering mode does not matter.

Using a manual lens: Be sure the base is not painted, and covers the electric contacts.
Using an AF lens: If the lens has an A/M switch, set it to M. If not, you must press the lens-lock button and the shutter simultaneously.

Thanks. That worked really well. All I needed to do was switch my camera from Manual Focus to Auto Focus.

Aside from working on AF.S it also worked on AF.A

That's a clever trick, pressing the lens-lock button, to retract the screw drive mechanism!

Funny to hear the screw drive in the body spinning away, trying in vain to focus the lens.

Can anyone tell me where CIF actually is in the menu? I can't find it at all…

Which camera do you want to know the answer for, as each one has a different menu layout.

Is there a "lens-lock button" on K20D?
K20D's catch-in-focus works fine with MF lens, but I am trying to get it working with AF (with no MF override on the lens itself).

Edit: I got it. it is the same lock that we use to remove the lens from the body. Using that is like a hack!
