Hi ISO Shock

Hi All

I have always been loath to use ISO above 800 on my Kr. Things always looked to noisy even at 800. Imagine my shock when I got usable photos at 4000 ISO, yes that is Four Thousand

Here's a couple. What do you think?

Ray

These pics are taken in natural light. Use ISO 4000 in low light, and you'll see the difference. Anyway, the pics you posted would have looked much better had you taken them at a much lower ISO.

I regularly shot my Kr to 3200 and found it more than satisfactory - I printed many of those images.

It also depends on the definition of usable.
I have shot pictures at 12800 and 25600 which were usable. Even won a contest with them.

If you are in a situation that you need high ISO, use the noise in your favour instead of stop shooting because things get too noisy.

Stefan, if I'd used anything lower I would have got a lot of motion blur with the slow shutter speed, especially with the second shot. It may have been natural light but under the fish quay where they were performing there wasn't much of it.
Matt & Macario, thanks for the feedback, maybe I'll try more high ISO shots.

I doubt it. EXIF says you used f14 and f10, respctively, which was unnecessary. You could have safely used f4 or f5.6 and ISO 400, if not ISO 200. (You might also know that diffraction generally affects IQ above f11...)

Very good!
Despite the opposition, I've always been a fan of low light shooting.
Here's one of the last high ISO images I took with my K-5 before switching mounts:

META: Pentax K-5, ISO6400, 1/125s, 35mm f/3.2

PP: Raw Therapee, Photoshop CS5, Topaz Denoise, iCorrect Portrait and Imagenomic portraiture(according to workflow).

Oh how I miss the good old days

Stefan: Thanks for that mate but you may have noticed that I was in Shutter Priority mode due to the speed requirements. Also, I wanted a deeper DoF so f4 or f5.6 would have been to narrow.

JohnBee: Nice photo mate
