The DA 18-55mm has sweet spot around 35mm, f8, that is where it gives best performance, if I remember right. Feel free to look at online lab reviews of this lens to see where it has best resolution. F8 is a good choice with this lens, and most lenses for landscape photos.

But all of the primes mentioned in this thread will give you noticeably sharper photos, with less flare and CA. This difference will be smallest at the 18-55mm sweet spot. I have Samyang 14mm and DA 35mm (also DA 40mm, and some other primes), and I never use my DA 18-55mm. Big difference once you learn how to use the primes really well (and remember, Samyang has no AF, so focusing takes some experience)

Thank you Na Horuk

Have just been out and tried the 18-55 at somewhere between 20-23mm - so will be interesting to see what the images come out like.
Thank you and now I know Samyang are NOT AF will not venture there.

And not there seems to be a problem with my Samsung NX2000 where the Micro SD card will not stay in the slot that I mainly use with their 20mm Fixed prime may be putting more emphasis on one for the K-r

Cheers for years

Again thank you all.
May even consider a better zoom than the 18-55mm that I have.

Cheers for Years

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is considered a decent, affordable zoom. But I would still recommend Pentax primes over it. Sharper, more reliable, snappy AF, same or better brightness..

Yes, or the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 - also very good... I'd go so far as to say it's as sharp as many of the Pentax primes, at least subjectively, though the primes definitely have more character, and they're well ahead in terms of AF consistency...

Thank you Na Horuk & BigMackCam,

We agree as far as the sharpness of the Primes and after trying out the "Sharper Sweet Spots" of the 18-55mm have decided to also consider a greater Telephoto lens too up to 200 or 300mm
Cheers for Years

That's easy - Pentax DA 55-300.* Affordable, relatively light weight, versatile, good IQ across the range (especially when stopped down by about 2 stops - e.g from f5.8 to f8 at the long end), 300mm means 300mm in field of view. Downsides are the screw-drive autofocus is noisy and can hunt a lot, and the minimum focus distance is 1.6m. But the positives far outweigh the negatives.

It comes in three versions: the current model is called HD DA WR (to avoid confusion with the newest 55-300 lens just note that it doesn't have PLM in the name, and the maximum aperture is f5.8 at the long end), and the earlier ones (widely available second hand cheaply - look in the PF marketplace) are the DA and DA-L. All three are optically identical, although the current version has the latest HD coatings. DA-L is cheapest - it has a plastic mount, no quick shift and doesn't come with a hood. DA is next - metal mount, quick shift and hood. HD WR adds new coatings, weather-resistance and nicer build. Second-hand prices go up from one model to the next.

See the reviews and sample photos contained or linked here:

SMC Pentax-DA L 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED Reviews - DA L Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

* Note that there is a new and different lens called HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE. But skip that one - it won't work on your K-r - or even on my K-30 or K-3.

The DA 16-45 lens is a great lens for this body. There is nothing negative that I could say about this lens. I have used mine extensively for 5 years with no issues whatsoever.
