Thanks for all the comments and suggestions, I do appreciate all the help. Will probably just stick with AA batteries for now as repair is more costly than the value of the camera.
Thanks again all, have a great holiday season.
As they say, sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution.

I believe the rechargeable AA Panasonic Eneloop batteries are among the best.

Camera shuts down (Baterry Depleated) notice with a standard fully charged D-LI109 battery and will not function.
But with 4 Alkaline batteries in an adapter will function fine with no errors.
Anyone have any thoughts on the problem and cure?
Yes, the camera is set to the correct battery type--------
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my back-up camera and I was close to scraping it.
Didn't notice question until today:
The powersupply of the K-r was still based on that one of the K-x.

The K-x run with AA's only but the K-r was the first one to use AA's and the D-LI109.

The PS was not stable enough with the K-r which also lead to the problem of mirrorflop.

You can also check what I wrote here:
ttps://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/116-pentax-k-r/399475-battery-type-aa-nimh-eneloop-k-x-k-r-k30-k50-k500-well-ist-k100-200-2000-a.html
i.e. set battery-type in the menu for Li-Ion and then try again.

If it can't be solved, costs for repair would be way too high.
But you have at least one Japan-Solenoid inside your K-r, possibly two!

These are of good value. If you dare DIY, then buy a Pentax K30/50 or K-S1/2 with the dark-image-syndrom
cheaply, repair it as shown here:
Manual solenoid replacement Pentax K30 / Discharge flash-condenser / Solenoid choice - PentaxForums.com
and you have a much better backup body than the K-r!
