Riga 2008
Lens: Can't remember Camera: Pentax LX Photo Location: Riga, Latvia ISO: 400
Posted By: Rorschach, 05-03-2010, 02:34 PM

This is a photo of a character that I found quite touching. It was a scorching hot day in Riga but nevertheless this man in his black, heavy clothes was slowly and steadily walking towards some destination...'bend but do not break'

I will continue posting shots form the 2008 Riga trip in this thread. Mostly street type shots but maybe others too. Comments and critique are welcomed.

This is my very first film scan as I've previously only scanned a few paper prints. Not only that, but the photo is also from the very first film roll that I have ever taken with some creative attempt or thought behind it (as opposed to rather repetitive images of research locations and study areas taken for work). Scanned on Polaroid Sprintscan 4000, film was Kodak BW400CN.

Regards,
Riku

i always appreciate you film 'scanners' out there.... the photo could use a bit more contrast and ambient light...and perhaps the top half could be cropped out to emphasize the subject more.. but the subject matter is intriguing.. and aptly titled.... thanks for sharing, dave m
(nice to see the hometown of some of my ancestors)

Thanks for the comments. I'll look into fiddling with contrast in the following scans. You have ancestors from there and I have descendants from there, as my wife is Latvian and so our two daughters are 50% Latvian

Very nice capture.
I too enjoy scanned film pictures. I am awaiting my own scanner.
I would agree with dcmsox2004, that some cropping and more contrast would help what is already an interesting and intriguing picture. I like the woman to the right looking back to the focal point, it draws the viewer in. By the way, Latvia is beautiful. And I am 50 percent Venezuelan.
Thanks for sharing. Jools.

Wow - beautifully done - a graphic depiction of the the concepts of "alienation" and "isolation."

Thank you. You put to words what I had been thinking about this image. Alienation and isolation is what this is all about. With this in mind, perhaps fiddling with contrast isn't such a good idea after all, because that would likely cause the man to blend into the image more. Now he is really popping out.

Jools, thank you. Yes Latvia is beautiful...as long as you're not expecting high altitudes and varying topography

What a great captures! I agree with the comment on the contrast - especially in the highlights. But then, these are wonderful time documents. Well done!

Rense,

Thank you for the kind comment

Here is another one from the same series: 'Up to date'.

Dust and lines from a processing machine are visible but I don't yet have the software to fix those by hand (I'm planning on getting Lightroom in the near future though).
