Caribbean sunset
Posted By: Sitting Bull, 05-05-2010, 08:55 PM

I would like your input on these please. I do not use my camera often so I understand practice makes perfect. These are a couple pictures I took on our Christmas cruise. Please keep in mind I have virtually little experience and lack understanding of getting the proper exposure etc...

That's a cool photo, the clouds almost look like a distant mountain range.

Not a bad attempt.
You exposed reasonably well for the scene, and was obviously struck by the colours and cloud formations when you took the shot.

A few points to consider:
Interesting foreground subject matter is lacking - even though the background of those warm coloured clouds is aesthetically pleasing, it alone is not enough to make a great photo.

Colour balance is certainly skewed too much to the warm side of the spectrum, making the oranges and reds oversaturated and overexposed whilst leaving the blues of the sky dull and grey in colour. Turn down the temperature of the shot and see the results change for the better in this regard.

Composition is good, though leaves little for the eye to hone in on - an extension of my first point. Get used to shooting in manual or a semi-automatic mode like Av, and do some reading up on composition, perspective, elements to great photos as well as the fundamentals of the exposure triad for a better photographic experience.

Thank you Ash,
I new the colors were not like what I was looking at but I did not know how to correct that. The picture is right out of the camera with no photo finishing. As far as composition goes there was not much else around looking over the rails of the ship. I tried to get as much in as possible.
I really appreciate your comments, it gives me a place to start at.
