Floating Magnet - Superconductor
Camera: Pentax k-x
Posted By: lattyday, 05-06-2010, 09:12 PM

Hey everyone! What you are seeing here is a magnet floating on a Yttrium-Barium-Copper Oxide superconductor. We made the superconductors in a lab in my Inorganic Chemistry class. The white wisp is liquid nitrogen evaporating. I've also posted a youtube video taken with my K-x. The focusing isn't the greatest; I have very limited experience with the movie mode on it! I hope you enjoy these science pics!

The first picture is just the wisps of nitrogen taking a really cool shape!

This doesn't look like science, it looks like magic. You're an alchemist, I guess....
Thanks for posting, nice to see!

Surprising subject...thanks for posting.
I love picture #3, although I would have preferred to see a bigger picture.

Thanks guys!

Iris - a bigger picture in general, or of the actual magnet floating, like closer up?

No close up! I like picture #3 very much and I think I like it even more if it is filling more space on my screen
