What kind of bee? photos

I was out in my backyard yesterday with the k10d and tamron 90mm macro chasing after some bees. There was one I'd never seen the likes of before. Anyone know what kind of bee this is?

For comparison here are a couple of my regular honey bees

It's apparently a Lesser Drone Fly - Eristalinus taeniops

Also known as a Band-Eyed Drone.

Not a bee.

Thank you kindly for the identification. I've never seen one before (or probably never noticed the difference without a macro lens)

Those are wonderful captures.

Last year I photographed a banded critter somewhat similar to that and have been looking for one ever since. No luck though.

Here is my close encounter with him from last year.

Yikes Stephen, I think that is a wasp of some time isn't it? It looks a bit different than the one I found in my garden. Great shot of whatever it is though!
