These were all handheld and I don't do well without a tripod. We had a long day and the temps were close to 100 and most likely hotter on the flightline. The shutter speed and aperture varied. Hope you enjoy them.

I really like the second one, where the clouds/trail on the left is adding to the composition...

Great shots! I love that dark blue sky in the second one.

Saturday was was the first time that I have tried shooting any kind of airsports and taking pictures of fast moving objects in the afternoon sun and heat is not as much fun as I thought it would be.

Question, what AF mode did you use? My K-X was having trouble focusing and I am now thinking that if I went to AF center spot it might have made it easier. Thanks.

Hi Ed, I used AF.C for the first time and it seemed to work pretty well. The heat and smoke from the planes made everything pretty hazy most of the day too. The clouds rolled in for just a brief period then went away again by the time the Thunderbirds hit the air so most of my pictures of them have dull blue skies. I did crop and add contrast to all of these though. You are right in thinking it wasn't as much fun as it should have been. My husband loved it though (I think it was my mother's day present - lucky me.)

Well done -- hand held. Some of us from the northern VA area will be attending the Andrews AFB show on Saturday, and it will be the first time I have ever tried shooting a moving plane. I only have 1 zoom (Tamron AF 70-300), so I might stick more with static displays.

Great Shots Susan!! Even if it was your Mother's day present

Tom, your Tamron is more than capable of catching moving airplanes. Hope to see some great shots from you too..

Thanks Tom and Jeff. And Tom, Jeff is right. All mine were shot with the 55-300 so you will be fine. I just cropped them.

Wow - these are terrific, Susan. The second one could be the cover of a magazine.
