Portraits from DA 50-200
Posted By: hinman, 07-30-2007, 10:38 AM

While I am looking for a portrait lens such as FA 50 f/1.4 or FA 35 f/2.0, I am trying out DA 50-200 for indoor without flash.

Looking for Portraits lens

Color from 50-200

I wish I have an external light to help with the shadow detail in these shots. And I have two days to decide on FA 50 f/1.4 before the $25 rebate run out on 7/31.

I don't see any problem with the shadow detail, myself, but of course it's hard to judge at this size. They're great shots, I love the expression in the first one. "Aaaaaaah that tastes goooood!" The one from behind is classic, it'd work very nicely in B&W too, I bet. You have a great subject and wonderful timing. I bet you'll get even better ones once you've got a lens that really pleases you.

Looks you got a real model there - camera shy does not appear to be an issue. I think a bit of cropping on #1,#2 and #7. I love the expression on #7 - well done.

Nice pictures hinman, you did a good job.

Before you buy a 50mm lens for Portraits might I suggest that you try borrowing a few different ranged lenses. You might find something that you like better.

With my style a 85mm - 100mm seems to work better than my 50mm.

Bought FA 50 f/1.4, some conversion

Thanks for everyone's comment. Little Laker, it is too late as I ordered the FA 50 f/1.4 today. And I agree with you as many of my shots in series are done around 70. And I am thinking of getting an cheaper external flash with swivel and bounce features to work with DA 50-200, kit's len and my K100D. Any suggestions are welcome -- I don't know anything on flash.

I have done some conversion to filtered b&w on red filter in Picasa and Tint on light blue color with sharpening by one notch in Picasa. I don't know the exact logic and it seems filtering out on red seems to improve the color in the skin tone but I lack explanation on the
reason -- just gut feel and hearing some of the blog post in other forum.

1. original

2. filtered b&w on red/orange in picasa

3. tint on light blue with sharpening

More C&C welcome.
