When I put my hand near the leaf he was resting on he just transferred to my hand for a minute before flying off.

I'm glad you pointed that out as it would explain why this one was flying erratically and was acting rather strange. I suppose they are like cockroaches who live several hours after their heads have been cut off of the way Chickens run around after losing a head. Maybe you have an answer yeatzee as you seem to know a lot about the insect world, I'd be interested to know.
